So just take a look at all these different things. A house isn't always an investment. It could be. It could be something that makes you more money. It could be just a complete waste. You're just putting money into it, and it's not actually getting you dollars back.
That doesn't mean it's an investment. If you want to buy a house and rent out a couple rooms, that could be an investment because it could be resulting in more money coming back to you. Right? So each one of these things isn't automatically an investment. A stock isn't automatically an investment. Building a business isn't automatically an investment unless you set it up, at the end of the day, you gotta put in a certain amount of money, and you gotta make more money back. And if you're doing that, then it's an investment play here. If not, well, it's probably a hobby or just for fun or an excuse just to buy something that you want to buy. In which case, just call it what it is. If Hana-Li wants to get more shoes, hey, in her case, she happens to be a performer, so she actually uses ... Like she's a singer, so, in her case, she uses the shoes when she goes and does a concert or a show or whatever. Hey, it's a good deal, right? You get the idea. You're going to put a certain amount of money in. You're going to make more back. That's an investment. Everything else, you're just spending money now. You don't even need it as an excuse. Just say, "I want to spend the money" on something that you want for the sake of wanting it. And that's okay, too. It just doesn't make it an investment. But, you know what, that's okay. Comment below on some ways that you've actually put money into something and made more money back. Love to hear it. Have a good one, guys. I'll see you tomorrow. (light music playing) You're basically betting on something where the odds are stacked against you. If you want to do it and basically manipulate it, you want to buy a bunch of it, do a bunch of PR, get it the value of it to go up, and then sell it, then, you know what? You could classify that as an investment. That's just not the kind of investment I like to do. And so I also do just consider that a gamble.
That's my personal viewpoint. That's my personal perspective. There are cryptocurrencies which are backed by other things, or used to fund businesses and organizations. Again, if you fully understand how cryptocurrency works, I'm not talking about the technology side of it, there's also an economics, like the actual value of currencies and things like that. If you actually understand all of that, and you feel comfortable, hey, go for it. There are guys who are using that technology to actually get funding for businesses or funding for charitable organizations and that kind of thing. Again, as long as you understand how it works, that could be an investment. But it's not necessarily an investment. Could be. Other types of things that people sometimes say, "Yeah, it's an investment." A car. If a car is going to be used to make you more money, then, yes. If you have to have a car in order to get to work, and if you can't, you can't work, but it is going to make you more money, great. But does that mean you actually need a Lambo? Not necessarily. But for some people, they go, "Oh, yeah, "because having the Lambo makes me a lot more money." Hey, you know what? In that case, power to you. The main point is, is this thing that you're spending money on going to make you more money? At the end of the day, that's an investment. I just don't like to classify things that I just want for the sake of wanting it as an investment because, unless it's going to contribute to more dollars coming back. If you can directly relate that thing, because you could say, "Well, you know, having a $5,000 "filet mignon steak equals more money back "because I'm happier." Yeah, sure, that's fine, but there are other ways of being happier, too, without it having to be a $5,000 steak. Right, like crab legs aren't the only way to do it. So I'm just saying as long as you can directly relate the dollars spent to more dollars coming back, then fantastic. If you were going to spend $5,000 on steak, and that meant that you had a bunch of people come who were going to pay you $10,000, well you just made 5,000 bucks. Hey, good for you. There's just a difference, and it really depends. A car isn't always an investment, but that doesn't mean it's always not an investment. If you have a contracting business, and you need a truck in order to get out and do jobs, well, then, yeah, a truck really could be a good investment for you. - In this video we're going to talk about what you are typically not taught about in investing. (light music playing) So I wanted to do a video on What Is an Investment? so we can actually look at what is an investment and what's not an investment. First off, let's go to a simplicity here. The word investment means that you're actually going to take some money, you're going to put certain amount of money into something and you want to make more money back. So you're going to put in $1 and you want to make back $2.
Obviously, the amounts are just made up, but you get the idea. Let's take one example. If you want to get educated on something because you actually want that to be a career, or you want that to be something you want to do, a skill set that you want to actually use to make more money, then fantastic. That could be an investment, a very good investment. If you want to learn something just for the sake of learning it that you don't actually want to do it for business, like let's take a real example here. Let's say you want to go learn to knit. Now if you want to just learn to knit for the sake of knitting, that's totally okay. That's totally fine, but that wouldn't be classified as an investment necessarily. You see what I'm saying? So the investments going to be the thing you want to put in a dollar, you want to put in some money, and you want to make some more money back. Buying a home could or could not be an investment. If you're going to buy a home that you want to live in, do you really want to then sell that when the market goes up? Do you really want to be selling it and moving? If you do, that could be an investment, but also realize that if you're selling it because the market went up overall in your area, let's say, that when you go to buy a new home, it will probably be more expensive, as well, then right now because the whole market is higher. You're also going to be then having to buy a new home, which is going to be done with a higher market. So it doesn't always add up. It's not automatically an investment. I do think that owning a home is much better than renting a home, if you can. However, owning the home that you live in isn't necessarily an investment. It's not like it's making you money back, unless you rent out rooms in it, and the rooms that you rent out make you more money. Buying a home that you're going to rent out to somebody else, like if you're going to buy a home and then rent the whole home out, and you're making more money back on it, well, then, yeah, for sure. Because each time a monthly payment is made, as well, the amount of equity, the amount of ownership you have in that home is also going up. So besides the fact that you may make a little bit extra on top of all the bills and everything else, you're also then every single month owning more and more of the home, which is real value. That could definitely be an investment. Another example is stocks or cryptocurrency as a thing. So stocks are a company goes public. They basically say, "Hey, everybody's going "to have some ownership of this business." In exchange for that, you're going to give me money. That's okay, but you're also betting, in many cases, on the fact that that company's going to do better or worse. It may or may not. That is a bet, just like anything else. Cryptocurrency, on the other hand, can be done many ways. There are cryptocurrencies that are backed by nothing. Really, I don't classify that as an investment. I classify that as a gamble. That's like saying, "I'm going to go to Las Vegas. "I'm going to put $5,000 down on red "on the roulette table, and, you know what? I'd like you to invest in my business." That's kind of like, "Alright, man." You can see a many-storeyed pachinko center right behind me. Pachinko is a Japanese gambling, something like a casino. Actually, gambling, especially casinos, are forbidden in Japan and pachinko is semilegal. Now I'll tell you how it works.
Let's go. PACHINKO Right at the entrance there's this automate where you can leave your umbrella, so no one steals it or takes by mistake. That's how it works. Put your umbrella in here and when the figures say 00, click the button and choose any number. For example, 11... let it be 12. Let it go paypal casino new zealand. See? It's not working. Then choose any other number. And when you want to take it back, just click 12. It's some kind of a code. It's very comfortable. They have this system not only in pachinko but in malls and some restaurants. It's useful. And if your umbrella is wet, put it in a packet here, so you won't get anything wet. Let's come inside. You'll hear how loud it is in here. In the end we couldn't film anything inside. We began but the staff told us we must not. We spent half an hour explaining why we need it and I showed my journalist card. Then came another man and a chief of this center, who he told us that we have to go to the main office as it must be a chain, I guess, to get a permission and wait for a week. We can't wait for so long. Besides, we've already started filming. So we decided to refuse and go to another pachinko. Now we gonna look for another one nearby and film there. They are not that different, after all. Some of them just serve drinks, but the machines are quite the same. Well, let's go. Pachinko is the most popular gambling in Japan. It is played by over 50 million people, the most of which do it permanently. There are over 19,000 pachinko halls in Japan, daily visited by millions of people of all ages. Pachinko looks like a vertical pinball, where you need to make the special balls fall in the small holes, that raises the probability of winning. To play the game they use the small 11-millimeter steel balls, that have a price depending on machine. One ball can cost from 1 to 4 yen. Recently, the machines where a ball costs half a yen have become very popular. Every player chooses an appropriate machine and buys the balls for a certain sum. The balls are put on a play field with a special spring, the force of which is controlled by a player. To do so there's a button that you can turn to the left and to the right. The play field has a lot of steel pins, barriers, walls and slopes that make it's harder to get the ball into the hole. A skillful use of the spring regulator helps to direct the balls right to the hole. The skillful players say that it's possible to find a perfect position that will guarantee your winning, but in most cases it's just a good luck. When the ball falls into the hole, various mini games appear on the play field like in slots. And at some point you win. It is believed that the word 'pachinko' is made up of a set of sounds which can be heard in the game. 'Pa' is a sound produced by the spring pushing the ball, 'chin' is a sound made by the ball bouncing off various steel barriers and 'ko' is a sound you can hear when a masterfully aimed ball falls into the hole. The first machines appeared in the 1940's. Before starting the game, you need to get the balls by using a card of a game center that you can get for free at the register or in the machine. And then you put the money in a bill receiver. The card allows to save your balance in case if you want to change the machine or to continue next time. The winning in pachinko is getting new balls which you must exchange for money. However, according to the Japan legislation the casinos and other gamblings are forbidden, so they use a "shadowy" exchange system to get around the law. A player exchanges the balls for something like a deer figure, for instance, and then he exchanges it for money in a nearby exchange office. This system allows to make pachinko a semi legal gambling and stay out of trouble. It is believed that such game centers are mostly run by yakuza and the game brings the country big money, making a great impact on the economy. Like I said, pachino is played by people of all ages and status. For some people it's just an entertainment, the others spend on it all their money, so they might go broke, sell their property and become homeless. Many people playing pachinko keep it secret from their relatives or friends. Despite of the great popularity pachinko is still a gambling and many people have a negative attitude to it. To keep people interested in this game, the new machines with various plots are built every year. These are often some popular anime, films and even music idols like AKB48 and Babymetal. Many psychologists spend years studying pachinko phenomen and still haven't agreed why such a simple game, which even a child can play, is so popular and makes people spend their money over and over again. By the way, the second season of anime Kaiji is devoted to pachinko. I recommend you to watch if you haven't yet. Well, this is what a Japanese game pachinko is. Would you like to play it? As for me, I spent a thousand yen to make this review, but didn't win anything. Because of the strict rules about the clients privacy, it was hard to make this article. The bad news is that getting your degree can be the most financially draining endeavor you’ve ever embarked upon. The good news is that there are lots of options to help you with the financial means to meet your goals. The goal of financial aid is to help you fund your college education through scholarships, grants and loan programs. The funding comes from various sources including federal, state, institutional, foundation and private funding sources. So, if you have a talent that makes you an excellent scholar, athlete, actor, dancer, singer, artist, welder, student leader (and many others!); you just might be able to utilize that talent to secure a scholarship to help fund your education. Scholarships are one of the best ways to fund your education because they are readily available and they do not have to be repaid once you graduate. The trick is knowing where to look and put yourself in the running. Here are the four A’s to getting a great scholarship: Ask: Many scholarships are kept under the radar. They are held by professors or foundations, only to be used by students who show an exceptional initiative, or they are held as rewards for those students who need a little extra help. These scholarships are usually not advertised publically, but the money is there. Other scholarships are specific to an individual department or major. Others are specific to individuals with special needs or extenuating circumstances. The key to obtaining these unclaimed scholarships is to ask about them. It’s best to start with a professor, the dean or department head in your area of study. Explain your situation, tell them exactly what you are looking for in dollar amount and ask about department-specific scholarships. They may hold keys to unlocking a treasure trove of scholarship opportunities, but you’ll never know if you don’t ask. Approach: When you find out about different opportunities, don’t be shy about contacting scholarship providers and declaring your candidacy for this year’s winner. Contact each provider in the manner they’ve requested, whether it’s email, fax or formal letter, and follow the directions of any scholarship application to the letter. Don’t bombard providers, but be cordial and professional. Perhaps approach others and suggest new scholarships or ask about opportunities that might be offered in the future. Awards: Many scholarships are offered through contest awards available to students through talent programs. Don’t discount awards because you don’t think you’re good enough. You are your own worst critic, and you might have a good shot at landing an award in areas you excel. In second-guessing your talents, you could be missing out on an opportunity for some generous funding. However, read the qualifications carefully and if you don’t meet the criteria of an award, don’t apply. There are other scholarships out there that will fit your unique characteristics and you don’t want to waste your time on awards you aren’t eligible for. Academics: In order to obtain and secure a scholarship, your academics need to be decent. Not all scholarships are dependent on a stellar GPA, but in order to be awarded a scholarship, the provider wants to see you are making an effort and you take your studies seriously. In addition to grades, getting involved in academic activities, campus clubs or other organizations and increase your chances at scholarships. Look into opportunities in student government, Resident Assistant positions or the campus newspaper. All of these positions come with a generous helping of financial aid. Apply: This is the most important step to obtaining a scholarship. The only way to have a shot at a great scholarship is to apply. Apply early, and apply often. If at first you don’t succeed, apply again. When I was in college, my specific department had more scholarships than they had applicants, simply because people didn’t apply. It’s usually as simple as filling out a form, maybe writing an essay or providing samples of your work. Applying is the only way to make scholarships available to you. From the tragedies at Virginia Tech to the scandal surrounding Penn State, violence on college campuses is unfortunately in the news more often than it should be. Rape, shootings, assault and personal attacks are all a risk on campus, but in between classes, dating and activities, most students don’t consider taking additional steps to stay safe on campus.
If you’re using a car to get to and from campus, have a safety kit accessible. This kit should have jumper cables, a flashlight, toolkit, pocket knife, mace or pepper spray and a backup cell phone battery if possible. If you’re choosing to live on campus, do your due diligences to inspect the room or off-campus apartment to be sure you have an adequate lock and a peep hole in the door. Do not leave your dorm room open to uninvited company and don’t allow your roommates to bring in guests overnight that you feel uncomfortable with. When you are on campus, take extra precautions when you are walking alone. Always carry pepper spray and keep it in an outside pocket or somewhere it is easily accessible. Try to stay in a group of people and avoid walking alone in the dark. If you are studying late, or have circumstances that require you to be on campus after dark, call your roommates to let them know where you are and when you are heading home. Always let at least one person know where you are going and who you are with. Always take your cell phone on a date. While some people believe it is impolite to your cell phone on a date, it is too big of a risk to be without it. You don’t have to answer it, but keep it with you at all times. Lastly, enter a contact into your phone with the name of ICE (In Case of Emergency), use a parent or guardian’s number in programmed with this code. Police officers and local authorities have been trained to look for this code in case an emergency occurs and they need to get in touch with a relative. College is a time to enjoy life, participate in activities and meet new people, but it is not the time to throw caution to the wind. Enjoy yourself but most importantly, keep yourself safe on and off campus. College is hard enough without having to worry about making a good impression. Most students want to make a good impression during the first two weeks of class in order to create a positive relationship with their professors that will pay off later down the road. Regardless of whether you choose a state university, local community college or one of many online colleges, the first impression can make all the difference. Not sure what you can do to ace that first impression quiz?
Well, that’s where we come in: First, remember two words: late and early. False: Go late, leave early. Nothing happens the first twenty minutes of class anyway, right? Just go, get the gist of what the lecture is about and then skip out of the back. Guarantee you your professor will never notice. True: Usually, the most important material is given out at the beginning of the class, because your professor has it at the forefront of his/her mind. Instructors always notice those who leave early, and are more likely to be less lenient in their grading if you don’t take class time seriously. If you must leave early or arrive late, let the professor know ahead of time by calling or sending an email. Next, understand that class time is purely optional. False: When there are more than 10 people in a class, the professor doesn’t know who you are and so you can sit in the back and sleep through most of it. Class time is generally useless because all of the information is in the book. True: Most professors test equally on information from the book and lectures, so if you rely entirely on the textbook, you’ll lose about 50% of the time. Class time is what you make of it, do what you need to do to be comfortable, focused, and prepared. Be a part of the class by actively listening, taking notes and participating in discussions. Last, remember that you are the boss. False: You’re paying for the class, so your professor is technically working for you. As their boss, you have the right to dress how you want, speak how you want and act however you see fit because, after all, you are paying tuition. True: You are paying tuition, but that only gives you the right to participate in class, not to abuse the privilege of higher education. Consider college as one four-year job interview. These professors may be the ones writing your letter of recommendation, or may end up as a professional reference on your resume, treat every class as you would your full-time career. Be polite, respectful and courteous. Making a good impression is the most important thing you can do during the first two weeks of any course. Don’t start off on the wrong foot by being arrogant, disrespectful or lazy. Don’t just turn in your homework, take the time to spell check, edit and double check your work. Don’t just show up to class, be prepared, participate and ask questions. If you’re willing to shell out the cash it takes to get a higher education, make the most of it by taking the time to be an active learner. |
